Treatment Twenty Four - Last Chemo!
Written by Alyssa.
Today is THE DAY! Mom had her last chemotherapy treatment this morning!
I was able to go into the appointment with her and dad, which was a pretty cool experience after hearing about it for so long. The appointment itself was uneventful. Mom was pretty excited to have one of her favourite nurses give her her last shot.
Since this was Mom’s last chemo, she was able to ring the bell! Suzanne, Angela and 11 of the grandkids had come along and met us at the bell after Mom’s appointment to celebrate. What a great moment! Mom says she finds this part awkward to ring the bell while everyone looks on, and the nurses sing at her to “hit the road Dawn (Jack).” But we know that this isn’t just for her. Yes, the bell is a symbol of completion and celebration, but it’s also a symbol of hope to those patients still in the waiting room awaiting their treatments.
And ring it she did! Didn’t even struggle to ring it. I remember when she rang it after completing her 2022 chemotherapy treatments. She said it was so difficult to ring it. Even in this, we see how much stronger she is this time around than she was in the last round.
We decided to celebrate with ice cream cones at home afterwards. What a day to choose that dessert! Brrrrr! The kids (and Mom) didn’t mind, so that worked out okay. 😀
The past six months have been quite the journey, and we praise God for blessing the treatments! He has been so good! Even as there were harder times like when Mom got sick near Christmas to days when the nausea and weakness felt like too much. He has given her the strength needed to push through.
So what happens now? Well, now Mom will continue to go for monthly treatments of Immunotherapy for the next two years. Mom is curious about how she will feel after only having the immunotherapy treatment because she’s never had it without the chemo treatment at the same time. So time will tell how that will go. Mom will continue to have monthly bloodwork and check-in appointments with her oncologist, Dr. A.
Prayer Requests:
Praise God for blessing the treatments and that Mom was able to complete her chemotherapy treatments.
Please continue to pray for mom as she continues to go for her Immunotherapy treatments.
